• PRESS RELEASE
"I think that in the wide Gianluigi Trovesi's record label production (almost forty years: the first album on his name, the historical "Baghèt", was released in 1978), this work is considered by its author as something particularly intimate. "In my opinion, many of these songs are like serenades", says Trovesi. Serenades, we add, recalling an open, sometimes theatrical lyricism: not the rough statements of love that could be heard in the Orobic valleys from which the talent of our multi-instrumentalist emerged, but the expressive tradition he calls "Mediterranean", in a wide and globalizing vision that goes from Gibraltar to the Dardanelles, from Cairo to Marseilles. Indeed, his interlocutor -”primus inter pares”- in this recording session is the guitar, the historical protagonist (in his various regional incarnations, from oud to lute to mandolin to bouzuki) of so many passionate night songs to lover... even if then Paolo Manzolini declines expression in a fully contemporary way.
Serenades of today's world can also be considered the standards of the American tradition here, "Yesterdays" and "In Your Own Sweet Way" (both reinterpreted in a passionately original way), as well as rhythmic moments of the album, linked to the long (and a little ironic) habit of Trovesi for dancing and "Dionysian" themes. Intimate is also the instrumental formula chosen by the leader, which binds some of its historical collaborators to conversations with few voices, duets, trio, and collective intros ending in single instrument solos. Intimate and revealing, finally, it seems to me the great space given on this occasion to the alto saxophone.
"After all, I always consider myself an alto player," says Trovesi, who is particularly proud of being for a long time "the first alto sax" of the glorious rhythmic orchestral orchestra of Milan's RAI; and the observation, coming out of the mouth of one of the major leaders of the revival of clarinet (in fact, of the whole clarinet family) in contemporary, European and world jazz, must not be overlooked. But it's true that in his soul Trovesi is always an alto sax player, indeed a great alto player. The melodic ductility, the timbre variety, the dynamic intensity he expresses with his instrument on this recording are those of an open, free, necessary chant. Just the freedom and necessity that drives men to sing their serenades.
